Consignmentīoth parties sign a consignment agreement, in which is clearly set out the description of the instrument, the estimate, reserve and sale date. This sets the minimum figure below which the instrument will not be sold. The reserve price is the seller’s “safety net” and is usually a figure (not published in the catalogue) just below the low estimate. This is the bracket within which we expect the final price to fall – though the high estimates are often exceeded. We will advise a high and low estimate – for example “A Fine Italian Violin by Giuseppe Rocca” estimate £150,000 – £200,000’. Once an attribution has been established, an auction estimate will be given based on our knowledge of the current international market.
